Meet A Miracle Kid – Jonah!

We have families that go above and beyond to share how Stormont Vail’s programs and services have helped them. When you give to Children’s Miracle Network at Stormont Vail Health, you’re helping kids like Jonah, one of our new miracle kids. Check out his story below!

Jonah was born on May 6, 2009 when he was adopted by his parents, Derek and Shawna. Jonah is like any typical 10-year-old boy who loves to build with Legos, play laser tag and Minecraft. He has dreams of becoming a contortionist, architect, and even a doctor. Since birth, Jonah has battled severe allergies, infections, and eczema. Over the years, treatments would be effective for a short while, but eventually Jonah would begin displaying symptoms again. He has battled his entire life with severe recurrent lung, skin, and lymph infections, severe atopic dermatitis, arthritis, and much more – to the point to which Jonah has not been able to lead a normal life. He has missed much school, been unable to participate in several activities, and suffers daily pain and relentless itching.

Jonah’s family recently got the answer to why no treatments have been effective when, after arduous testing, Jonah was diagnosed with Hyper IgE Syndrome (HIES).  In short, it is a very rare primary immunodeficiency illness with the life-long risk of developing fatal complications.

This disease is not currently curable. Jonah will require constant, relentless vigilance to his care due to the continual danger of infections. Every new infection, allergen or injury requires immediate treatment in an effort to prolong his quality of life. He receives great care and is thankful for the many doctors, nurses, specialists, and medical personnel that are a part of his daily life.

Jonah is a trooper! He will always be found with a smile on his face and hope for the future! He has overcome so many fears and anxieties through the years thus far, and has pushed through some incredibly difficult times. He is one strong boy!
